How to get the most out of the heyOBI loyalty program

To be honest, I’m skeptical about loyalty programs. Too often, it’s just marketing noise. But once, while tackling another renovation and visiting OBI three times a week, I decided to try heyOBI—and didn’t regret it. I figured it out not from a brochure but in practice—at the checkout, on my phone, when I had to return items or look for discounts on the right tools. Below, I’ll explain what this system is, how it works, and what you can realistically get from it.

What is heyOBI and why is it needed at all

HeyOBI is not a card in the traditional sense but a digital service. It works through an app and gives access to personalized offers, discounts, and purchase history. So you’re not just a customer but a registered user with tracked interests.

After registering in the app, you get a digital customer card. At checkout, you can scan it, and the purchase is immediately added to your history. Available discounts, coupons, and everything related to previous orders are displayed there. It’s especially handy when returning items—no receipt is needed. Just open the app, show the purchase code, and you’re done.A middle-aged man holding a phone with the shopping app open stands near the checkout at a large OBI hardware store. In the background are bright shelves with tools and household goods.

For me, the biggest benefit wasn’t the coupons but the purchase history and paperless returns. When you’re buying the same item five times in a row during a renovation "just to try," this is a lifesaver.

Functions and real benefits that work

The most useful features are:

  • Digital customer card. Show it at checkout—and everything is saved. No paper receipts, everything’s in the app.
  • Transaction history. You can see exactly when and what you bought, the order number, and the items—especially handy if you need to repaint the same color or replicate a setup.
  • Coupons. For example, after registration, you get a 5% discount—small but nice. Works once, valid for 10 days after activation.
  • Receipt-free returns. A fully functional feature. Just show the purchase code in the app.
  • Tips and ideas. The newsletter includes decent guides for garden setups, kitchen ideas, or storage solutions—sometimes useful.

Note that coupons cannot be combined with other promotions. If an item is already discounted, you can’t apply another. And it only works in physical stores, not online.

OBI gift cards: convenient but with nuances

A gift card is prepayment. Load it with any amount up to 5000 PLN and use it gradually. No surprises—the balance stays on the card. If the card doesn’t cover the full amount, you can pay the difference.A woman in casual clothes shows the cashier her smartphone screen with the heyOBI app QR code. In the foreground are items for return, the checkout, and a Zwrot (Return) sign.

I gave such a card to a colleague for a housewarming—it’s convenient, no need to guess what they might need. The key thing—the card must be activated at checkout; without activation, it won’t work.

The only downside is that the card isn’t electronic—you have to visit the store to activate and use it. Online use isn’t available yet.

Data protection. How it works and whether to worry

Everything here follows EU standards. Personal data is processed by two companies: one handles the technical side, the other manages user communication. Everything is coordinated, with clear responsibilities outlined for each party. The data itself includes your name, address, purchase history, preferences, and—if you consent—even geolocation.

No one tracks you unnecessarily—all analytics work only with your consent. If you don’t want to share something, you can disable it in the settings. Account deletion happens upon request or automatically after five years of inactivity.A hand holding a smartphone displaying the heyOBI app interface with a personal 5% discount on garden products

Technical data, like IP or app version, is stored for a maximum of one month. This is for diagnostics to prevent app malfunctions. The rest is used for segmentation—basically, so you don’t get furniture ads if you only ever buy tools.

Is it worth it?

If you visit OBI once a year—no, it’s not. But if you shop there regularly—absolutely yes. Hassle-free returns, coupons, order history, personalized offers. It all works smoothly, doesn’t get in the way, and eliminates the need for physical loyalty cards.
